About this artwork

This is the “England” by Josef Koudelka. A 1976 gelatin silver print, it sits in the middle of his Exiles series, a body of black‑and‑white work taken while he roamed Europe after fleeing Czechoslovakia in 1970. The image shows an old man looking away from an empty road flanked by long rows of worker‑brick houses. The sky is grainy, giving the scene a dark, looming mood. The figure is often read as a stand‑in for Koudelka himself, a solitary exile in Britain, never staying more than a few months in any place. The composition—tight framing, stark contrast, and the sense of endless journey—captures the restless freedom and constant displacement that defined his life as a stateless wanderer. The photograph reflects not just a physical landscape but the emotional geography of exile and the search for identity in foreign terrain.
