About this artwork

This is the "Abstract Speed - The Car has Passed" by Giacomo Balla. Painted in 1913, this oil on canvas captures the Futurist obsession with machines and motion. Balla was a leading figure in the Italian Futurist group, and here he turns a simple road scene into a kinetic explosion of colour. The canvas was originally the right‑hand panel of a triptych; the left hand showed "Line of Force Landscape" and the centre "Lines of Force Noise". Together they trace a car speeding down a white road, with green and blue forms evoking earth and sky behind it. Notice the pinkish swirls on the right—Balla imagined those as exhaust fumes, hinting at the car’s passage. The piece is full of jagged, overlapping lines that suggest both motion and the vibration of engine noise. Balla wanted to make the viewer feel the speed, not just see it. This painting still feels like a burst of energy, like a snapshot of a car racing past, frozen in time.
